• Is the Catholic Church still a Missionary Church?

Deacon Dan Powers is a permanent deacon in the Roman Catholic Church. He was ordained in the Diocese of San Diego in 2006. He has served in 5 dioceses throughout the United States holding almost every position in the diocese and parish. He has served on the Bishop’s Curia in 4 dioceses. He has seen the church at its best and he has seen it fall short.

“I hope that this blog becomes a place where we can love the Church but love it enough to want to bring about change. Saint Francis heard the words “Rebuild my church which, as you see, is falling down” and realized that the Lord wasn’t calling him to physically rebuild churches but to reform the existing church. We too are called to work to rebuild our church – which is falling down.

Perhaps this blog will begin real discussion about the problems that the modern church is facing. Perhaps we can share solutions as we get to the root causes of the problems. Together, we can explore solutions with an honest dialogue about problems in the church: Corruption, greed, laziness, fear, and bureaucracy.”

Pope St. John Paul II said many times “Do not be afraid.” We must be fearless in speaking the truth in love and charity. But we must be fearless. Listen again to the words of our former pontiff: “Do not be afraid, then, when love makes demands. Do not be afraid when love requires sacrifice.” The world needs the church – a healthy church. How can we rebuild this falling church from the bottom up and the top down?

On the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord.
